Golden Age

Javier Barrios (b. 1979, Mexico) lives in Oslo and has his studio in Vestfossen. He was educated at the Oslo National Academy of the Arts and at the School of Visual Art in New York (2007).

Javier has made a name for himself both domestically and internationally with his works that reference science fiction, outer space, future visions, and technology.

For Atelie Editions, Javier has created 24 silkscreen prints with two different motifs, which are a part of his ongoing series Golden Age

By individually processing each piece with drawing, painting, and colored plexiglass, Javier aims to highlight the complexity of the motif by working in layers both in front of and behind the plexiglass and on the silkscreen itself.

I have a desire for the work to compete against itself through the various expressions and for it to be experienced as something that is in motion and change.
Javier Barrios

The various layers can refer to different software programs as well as "archaeological excavations." The title refers to civilizations that at one point had their heyday before they perhaps collapsed or disappeared for new civilizations to emerge.

"I often think about how technology is the reason for our development and at the same time is the reason we are at risk of collapse. Technology is both the problem and the solution simultaneously."
